About the wind farm

Strategic location in Offaly County

The Moanvane wind farm is located in Offaly County in the heart of Ireland, about 90 minutes west of Dublin by car. The Offaly region is one of the country’s leading wind power sites and has been among the top five counties in wind power generation since 2024.¹

Twelve turbines for stable yield

Moanvane’s twelve turbines have been on the grid since September 2024. With a total output of 57.6 megawatts, they generate electricity from renewable energy sources for Ireland. A 15-year off-take agreement secures the revenue in the long term and ensures stable returns.

Offshore-grade wind conditions

The special thing about the site is the exceptionally good wind conditions: Ireland has one of the best wind power potentials in the world, with onshore wind speeds of around 7 metres per second.² Together with its central location and good grid connection, Moanvane is particularly profitable. Statkraft, Europe’s largest producer of renewable energies³, will continue to manage the plant even after the sale to klimaVest.

Ireland: European leader in wind energy

Leading position in Europe

Ireland has become one of Europe’s leading wind energy markets. At the end of 2024, the country exceeded the threshold of 5,000 megawatts of installed onshore wind capacity.⁴ Wind farms provided around a third of Irish electricity in 2025, and Ireland now has more than 5,000 MW of installed onshore capacity with a further 150 MW added in 2025.⁴ In the European comparison, Ireland is in the top group: Only Denmark achieves a higher share of wind power at 56 per cent, followed by Ireland at 33 per cent.⁵ With regard to installed wind power potential per capita, Ireland is among the world’s leaders and is considered a global pioneer in the integration of variable renewable energies into the electricity grid.⁶

Ambitious expansion targets by 2030

Ireland’s Climate Action Plan sets ambitious goals: By 2030, 80 percent of electricity needs will be covered by renewable energy, with 9 gigawatts of onshore wind power, at least 5 gigawatts of offshore wind power and 8 gigawatts of solar capacity planned.⁷ The Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) is the central funding instrument through which projects are awarded competitively.⁷ New wind farms pay at least 2 euros per megawatt hour produced into a fund for the local community.⁸

Economic benefits of wind energy

The more wind power flows into the grid, the cheaper electricity becomes: In December 2024, the megawatt-hour cost an average of 79 euros on windy days - 294 euros on low-wind days with fossil power generation.⁴ New power lines to the UK (since 2024) and France (planned for 2026/2027) are connecting Ireland more closely to the European electricity market.⁹ Surplus Irish wind power can thus be exported to continental Europe and, in the future, also contribute to cheaper electricity prices in Germany.

Next to Germany, Finland, Sweden, France and Spain, Ireland is the sixth country in the portfolio. The strategic expansion opens up one of Europe’s most windy markets¹ with outstanding natural wind conditions, stable regulatory framework conditions and long-term economic hedging.

With the acquisition of Moanvane, Commerz Real underlines its expertise in cross-border transactions in the field of renewable energies. The transaction demonstrates the fund management’s ability to identify and successfully acquire attractive assets in new markets - a competence that is of central importance for the further development of the klimaVest portfolio.

Ireland is a very attractive location thanks to its unique and favourable wind conditions. Wind power already accounts for one third of the country’s electricity supply and has become an increasingly relevant part of the Irish energy mix.
